A USSF sanction is required for all amateur sumo tournaments and public demonstrations except for: (1) events involving only members of your own club, or (2) events involving only yonen (persons under 13 years of age). Charity events are not exempt from conformance to USSF sanction obligations.

An event is a tournament if any of the following apply: (1) an entry fee is charged, (2) you use any kind of competition format to determine winners, or (3) you give medals, trophies, and/or any other form of award.
