USSF Policy No. 5 establishes a standardized and accessible system for rank advancement (kyu and dan) in U.S. sumo. It adapts the traditional Japanese ranking model to the U.S. context, recognizing limited access to expert partner and aims to promote skill development and formal recognition of athletes’ progress.
The USSF has established six kyu grades:
Rokyu (6th Grade) – White Belt
Gokyu (5th Grade) – Yellow Belt
Yonkyu (4th Grade) – Orange Belt
Sankyu (3rd Grade) – Green Belt
Nikyu (2nd Grade) – Blue Belt
Ikkyu (1st Grade) – Brown Belt
General Requirements for All Kyu Grades:
Must be a registered and current member of both the USSF and a local sumo club.
Pay a certificate fee.
Recommendation from a dan (black belt) holder.
Minimum of 6 months in the current grade before promotion.
Attend at least 51% of scheduled classes.
Participate in at least one tournament or demonstrate skills through sparring.
Complete an oral or written test.
Demonstrate proficiency in basic movements, techniques, and other skill.
